David Altmejd
The Serpent
David Altmejd’s The Serpent at White Cube New York is a visceral exploration of transformation, where nature’s hierarchies collapse into a primal, ecstatic flux. Featuring a large-scale installation alongside busts and bronze sculptures, the exhibition blurs the boundaries between man and beast, structure and entropy, the sacred and the grotesque. Drawing from his signature interplay of hyperrealism and raw expressionism, Altmejd’s sculptures appear as if caught mid-mutation—twisting forms that radiate an eerie, almost divine energy. The busts, with their fragmented yet intricate anatomy, suggest figures unraveling and reforming in real time, while the bronze sculptures evoke relics from an alternate, mythic past. The Serpent pulsates with chaotic beauty, an unsettling yet mesmerizing confrontation with the sublime chaos of the subconscious.
